Why FAN Decided To Collaborate With The Ops Collective

Apiary for Practical Support’s (Apiary) goal is to contribute to a well-functioning, collaborative, fully-resourced practical support ecosystem within the larger abortion access movement while advocating for increased awareness in the pro-abortion space.

Apiary was looking to solidify and strengthen their Financial and Operations structures. As a newly formed organization, Apiary was in need of strategic operations support to guide the set-up of its infrastructure and systems, and to establish compliant and effective management practices  ensuring they are designed to most effectively scale impact. 

The Ops Collective Helped Apiary By:

  • Conducting an operational assessment of Apiary to ground their strategic plans, governance, decision making structures, and programmatic goals and developing an operations work plan to allow Apiary to operate at scale. 

  • Developing and implementing policies, systems and processes to support the execution of programmatic goals, such as board management, any re-granting, HR systems, financial management and systems, contracting, donor management, and payments.

  • Setting up a system to ensure tracking of all state and federal compliance requirements.

  • Coordinating implementation of organizational insurance policies. 

  • Identifying and implementing people operations systems including an employee handbook, analysis and research on employee health insurance plans, hiring/recruiting systems, timekeeping system, and expense reimbursement, in anticipation for other people operations needs that might arise.

  • Identifying and implementing a data tracking and management system.

  • Co-developing a staffing plan and recommended structure for the organization and how work flows through said structure.


Outcomes Of Our Work Together - Develop and strengthen an operating model that can adapt as they grow

  • Created a revised employee handbook to guide the people operations of the organization. 

  • Supported in the hiring process for new roles, including reviewing hiring materials and workflows. 

  • Developed Board standard operating procedures, including formalizing certain aspects of the governance structure. 

  • Built out an equitable, efficient, and compliant grant making process centering grantees. 

  • Worked closely with Apiary’s accountants to develop a financial manual and handbook.
